What Is Message Testing Research?

My father is a lifelong pollster, and my first company pioneered the use of online communities for insight-gathering. As I think about the future of the $76-billion market research industry, I am convinced that we are in the midst of something big — a major transformation driven by consumers themselves. We uncover and organize a range of discrete ways to present the information (frames) that can shape how people perceive the product or therapy. Frames are based in behavioral science principles and patterns we’ve seen across our work.

We learned that establishing appropriate governance within the clinical system required monitoring all responses that were not formatted as expected, and supporting the rare case that included an actionable patient response. To validate and prioritize messaging at scale, organizations then incorporate quantitative research methods such as surveys, concept testing, and MaxDiff analysis. These approaches measure which messages stand out, which are most persuasive, and which drive key outcomes like engagement, click-through rates, and conversion intent. By combining qualitative insight with quantitative validation, companies can develop a data-driven messaging strategy that strengthens brand positioning, improves marketing performance, and ensures messaging resonates across different audience segments. This review included only full-length archival articles on empirical studies, excluding brief reports, research letters, and industry case studies that may have provided early insights into emerging trends.

Message testing analyzes a company’s marketing message to evaluate how well it resonates with its target audience. This guide explains what message testing diagnoses, which methods produce useful evidence, how B2B teams run a test, and what the existing PandaDoc, Metadata, and Loom examples show. If message testing isn’t part of your marketing strategy, you’re likely wasting resources on copy that doesn’t resonate, spending thousands on campaigns that don’t engage, and publishing generic landing pages.

Spell out the customer relevance by identifying the problem and selling the customer on it in their own words. Wynter is the most efficient way to gather the needed qualitative data to refine your message. In contrast, when messaging isn’t working, it can confuse, frustrate, and alienate your customers. → Wynter helped Appcues improve their conversion rate by 73% by getting to messaging that resonates. • They enhance collaboration and sharing of documents with other researchers regardless of location (Hobson and Cook, 2011; Skaržauskienė et al., 2013).
  • We’ve built the most depth in a defined set of industries, buyer roles, and geographies, so the data you get is actually representative of the people you’re trying to reach.
  • Quantitative research methods like surveys, concept testing, and MaxDiff analysis are used to measure messaging performance at scale, revealing which messages are most compelling and which fall flat.
  • Across 22 global markets, 73.3% of consumers prefer messaging when communicating with a business—a shift from legacy communication channels to conversational commerce.

Clear communication at the point of care, e.g., setting expectations about appropriate message use during visits, may help address these misunderstandings without adding new technological burden. Finally, additional safeguards must be in place to protect patient privacy when messages are accessed or sent by non-patient senders, such as caregivers, guardians of adolescents, or individuals assisting patients with disabilities355,370,371,383. Potential strategies include role-based access controls, clear proxy account policies, and automated alerts to help patients maintain awareness of who can view or send messages on their behalf. There is increasing interest in medical text messaging interventions being used to achieve positive patient outcomes across a range of clinical research and health practice environments.

There is also the risk of deleting the conversation, and once deleted, the entire thread is deleted. Hence, we have to revert to traditional email correspondence, which makes communication relatively slow, especially since we are from different time zones. Writing research papers is not mechanistic or routinary, but involves lots of emotions and requires social support. The emojis allow you to express your appreciation, frustrations, and many other feelings (DA). Galloway Research Service is a full-service market research firm headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. We deliver actionable insights through innovative methodologies and decades of expertise.

Further, recipient replies to text messages can be “zero-rated” by health program providers so that they don’t cost the individual, ensuring access across socioeconomic groups. Even so, evidence shows that text message campaigns are a cost-effective way to reach people 15,39. Our paper aims to provide evidence of how Messenger can be used for specific academic work. Our reflection and analyses of our personal experiences provide critical insights into how Messenger has been pivotal in accomplishing our aims to publish journal articles and secure a research grant. Examples of social media used for research collaboration include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, ResearchGate, and Mendeley, have been used. These social media platforms enhance information sharing, informal scholarly communication, and research collaboration (Thelwall and Kousha, 2015).

Thus, this analytical framework is useful for reflecting on different elements of social learning systems to understand the patterns of social activities and development, consequently bringing the intended outcomes. Although different types of social media are evident in literature, to the best of our knowledge, there have been little to no studies about using Messenger as a platform for collaborative research writing. Message testing research pinpoints the specific types of messages that will resonate most strongly with a target audience. By displaying different messages to your desired audience and gauging changes in perception, interest, and purchase intent, you can isolate which messages will drive interest and engagement. When your team has multiple messaging directions, testing provides an objective, data-driven basis for selecting the message with the greatest market impact. We describe three stages that outline a model environment, beginning with a clinician who sees patients, and resulting in the ability to use patient‐provided SMS data from patients’ personally owned technology for research.

External firms also bring specialized expertise and proven methodologies that improve the quality and reliability of insights. This includes designing effective qualitative interviews, applying quantitative tools like MaxDiff to prioritize messaging, and connecting insights across methods to identify what truly drives clarity, differentiation, and conversion. In addition, research partners can recruit the right audiences—including niche B2B decision-makers or hard-to-reach segments—and structure studies in a way that produces actionable recommendations. The result is messaging that is not only validated, but optimized to perform in the real market. Text messaging remains the most equitable way of reaching people regardless of type of phone, socioeconomic status, or geographic location. In much of the world, it is free to receive text messages and a smartphone is not required to receive a text message.

When researchers seek to contact patients, they are required to gain formal consent through procedures in the study protocol or to provide the IRB with an appropriate justification for a waiver of informed consent. An HIPAA waiver may be used in situations with no patient contact, for example, preparatory to research studies or retrospective chart review. The HIPAA waiver and waiver of informed consent are agreements between the researcher and the IRB that grants the researcher authority to use patient data without either formal written consent and/or written HIPAA authorization from the patient. In this SMS project, researchers wanted to interview patients who had received text messages, and because the patients agreed to be contacted by researchers via personal contact with their physician, a waiver of informed consent was appropriate. The project team brought together diverse public and private sector partners and subject matter experts who advocate for and work directly with the identified populations disproportionately impacted by suicide to serve as Guidance Panel members.

The agreed reflection guides provide data that reflect the information needed to answer our research questions. We did not use any other narratives apart from our individual and negotiated responses to ensure that the data included in this paper reflect our objective view. The use of social media in education is increasing as it provides alternative platforms for learning, teaching, and assessment (Miller and Olthouse, 2013; Kio, 2015; Yuk and Yunus, 2021). It optimizes the chance of messaging hitting the mark dead-on the second a customer reads it. Businesses that pursue this path enjoy higher on-site conversion rates, improved lead volume, and stronger subscription rates.

2 The Role Of Messenger In Our Collaborative Research Work

We methodically review the messages, identifying what makes each distinct, and analyze each narrative across multiple dimensions, from the overall story it’s telling to how it resonates with audiences and how individual words make a difference. We end up with a smaller number of “control” messages to test, which we optimize and turn into research-ready stimuli. We also develop a list of key questions and lexicon probes to explore during research, to truly understand how they think.

In addition, it would be good if the messages could be organised based on threads or topics. Furthermore, dependability was ensured by providing enough information for other researchers who want to do similar studies. We acknowledge that our views may not have captured the entirety of using Messenger for collaborative research work.

When academics agree to venture into co-authorship, the collaborative nature of writing offers supportive environment for all while increasing the accountability of everyone to complete their assigned tasks on time. Apart from the actual writing processes, there are other processes occurring that impact the success of collaborative research writing. Over a period of 4 months, the project sent targeted messages to enrolled patients from the clinical health system through the third‐party SMS system to the patients, and managed the delivery and responses of the messages. Messages that were consistent with expected results (i.e., “1, For Yes; 2, For No”) were tracked in the REDCap system, messages that were unexpected in format (e.g. “I want to come in today”) were reviewed daily by nursing staff for potential clinical action.

While several SM studies exist that provide important insights on the former point, many were conducted before the widespread adoption of modern EHRs and digital health technologies and thus reflect an outdated technological landscape. Early reviews examined its potential to enhance patient-provider communication, focusing on user expectations, confidentiality concerns, and technological limitations reflective of the pre-2010 landscape30,31,32. Conversely, more recent reviews highlight specialized aspects rather than a generalized view of the field, covering specific vendor applications33, disease- or population-specific implementations34,35,36, or possessing computational or methodological foci37,38. A comprehensive understanding of SM’s role in care delivery—its benefits, limitations, and areas of adoption—is essential for determining whether, where, and how AI should read more be integrated into clinical workflows.

It determines which messages are most relevant, believable, unique, and motivating — providing the strategic foundation for all downstream communications including advertising, sales materials, website copy, and public relations. Given the complexity of the agreements and these evolving social relationships to the technology and health system, deciding explicitly who is maintaining privacy and security requirements and managing data sets at each stage of the project is critical. Depending on the capacity of the three entities (i.e., clinical, third party, and research) a project coordinator who can access all levels of data may best fit this role. If the project coordinator is a member of the research entity, the IRB approval will need to allow the research entity access to a more identifiable data set. All members of the research entity need to be well versed in HIPAA and the definition of identifiable PHI. A compelling marketing message makes customers feel understood, while showing how your product benefits them and how it can solve their problems.

However, a higher volume of SM interactions was reported to reduce new patient intake capacity84,91. While its association with emergency visits varies by conditions92,93,94, SM has generally been linked with more efficient primary care workflows, including lower urgent care utilization and fewer unnecessary visits95,96,97,98,99. Studies have found that provider burnout remains a concern because of large message volume100, while message characteristics, such as sentiment scores, do not appear to be a major contributing factor101.
